How To Start Working Out for Beginners

If you never really exercised before you may be unsure how to start working out. You might be thinking how you can stick to it. When beginning any workout program, it’s really important to pace yourself and not risk injury by overexerting yourself in the beginning. If you choose to move around as a regular part of your day, there’s a lot of workouts that you can choose to do. However, your exercise routine is about you- it’s about your goals, your preferences, and your interests.

Here are 7 tips to get you started in your fitness journey and stick to it:

Identify your “why”. This is a great part of staying disciplined, consistent, and positive when you’re just starting your fitness journey. Understanding your motivation for why you started will help you stay on track when unexpected barriers come up.

  1. Start Slow. Don’t just jump in and start working out 5 days a week. It’s better that you gently start at 1-2 days per week and ramp it up from there. Starting slowly will not only prevent you from overdoing it, but it will help you assess your current fitness level.
  2. Ditch the all-or-nothing attitude. You don’t have to spend hours in a gym. A little exercise is better than nothing. Adding just modest amounts of movement to your every day routine will help you build a habit.
  3. Find a workout you enjoy and look forward to. When you’re doing workouts you love, you're more likely to get more motivated to continue and view it as a positive in your life. Don’t choose an exercise that you thought you’re supposed to do because it's easy, trendy, or convenient. Finding exercise you enjoy doing is so important because it’ll be that much easier to just start and get it done every time you show up to work out. When you love what you’re doing you’ll more like to be consistent and stick with it.
  4. Track your progress. Monitoring your progress does give you a sense of direction and helps you make the necessary adjustments to your daily activity. Once you start constantly measuring your results, you’ll begin noticing your transformation from day one. Once that begins,  you’ll most surely become more confident, motivated, and more focused to keep going.
  5. Put it into your calendar and consider it as an appointment. When you schedule your workouts, they become more of your routine. Your workout becomes much like anything else you do every day. When you have a scheduled workout routine, your body will welcome rest days and help keep you on track toward your goal.
  6. Reward yourself.  Rest and relaxation can be an excellent way to reward yourself for your hard work. Set aside a certain amount of time to just watch television, read a book, or simply take a nap. Taking a power nap results in your pituitary gland that pushes the growth hormone that recovers muscles.

How long should a beginner workout?

If you’re a beginner at working out, spending an hour in the gym every single day might cause a greater risk for injury than a reward. Try starting with short workouts that are 30 minutes or less. As you feel your strength building, you can add a couple more minutes every week. Just always keep in mind that completing a 15-minute workout is better than skipping a 40-minute workout entirely.
